The oil is steam distilled from the root of the plant The key active ingredient valepotriates in this plant, occur at levels of only about 0.05% in the root, are thought mainly responsible for its sedative effect on the central nervous system. One study shows valerian to be sedative for agitated patients, while it stimulates someone who is suffering from fatigue.
Note this is a very odorous oil, and its very tenacious ( the odour is not to everyone's liking), unrefined virgin steam distilled roots.
